As the government promotes electric vehicles, concerns regarding their reliability and quality are coming under scrutiny. The initial surge in demand for electric vehicles is waning, potentially due to safety apprehensions.

Incidents involving fires and battery explosions have raised questions about the safety of these vehicles. While governments advocate for e-vehicle adoption, there is a lack of public awareness about safety precautions and quality standards. Even with affordable and prevalent options like e-rickshaws, risks persist due to non-compliance with safety measures, including the possibility of catching fire.

Following a series of recent incidents, authorities are taking strict action against electric scooter manufacturers who fail to adhere to prescribed safety standards, imposing fines for non-compliance.

Fine of Rs 1 Lakh

In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, transport officer Ramesh Prajapati apprehended an e-scooter rider who was going over 40 km per hour. Investigation revealed that the manufacturer had violated safety standards, prompting the Transport Department to impose a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the company.

What are the rules?

According to rules, the minimum age for driving any two-wheeler is 18 years. However, regulations for electric bikes differ slightly, permitting individuals aged 16 to 18 to operate them under specific conditions. These conditions stipulate that the vehicle’s speed should not exceed 25 km/h, and that the electric two-wheeler must have a power output of less than 250W. Violation of these standards may result in substantial fines for riders.

Challan of Rs 42,550 for expired permit

In a separate incident in the DD Puram area of the same city, authorities inspected a vehicle used for driving instruction and discovered expired fitness certificates, insurance, and permits. Despite these violations, an institute named ‘Krishna Driving Training School’ continued to provide driving lessons. Consequently, the vehicle was seized, and a fine of Rs 42,550 was imposed.
