Beta carotene gives orange and yellow fruits and vegetables their colors. It also has many health benefits, and beta carotene for dogs can help support the immune system and eye health.
You’ve probably heard that you should eat carrots to improve your eyesight—maybe even as often as you’ve heard an apple a day keeps the doctor away! And while carrots may not actually improve visual acuity, they are good for eye health. Beyond that, carrots also support immune health and have other benefits, and the secret is beta carotene. Let’s learn more about the benefits of beta carotene for dogs, how you can easily add it to your pup’s diet to help support their health, and two great new supplements with beta carotene that support digestion and skin & coat health.
What is Beta Carotene and Where Can You Find It?
Beta carotene is a naturally occurring pigment that the body converts into vitamin A. It’s a phytonutrient, meaning it’s a substance created by plants. It’s present in orange and dark green fruits and vegetables like:
- Carrot
- Sweet potato
- Cantaloupe
- Butternut squash
- Pumpkin
- Spinach
- Kale
Immune Support and Other Benefits of Beta Carotene for Dogs
As an antioxidant, beta carotene helps neutralize free radicals, which can damage tissues and cells. Antioxidants like beta carotene help your dog’s body fight infections by helping it produce more antibodies and enhancing the activity of immune cells. Further, the body also uses vitamin A to maintain healthy skin and mucous cells, important elements in the immune system’s fight against infections. The skin forms a physical barrier between the outside world and the body while mucous cells help protect the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts from pathogens.
Beyond that, beta carotene for dogs has additional benefits, including that it supports:
- Eye health and vision
- Healthy skin and shiny coat
- Cellular growth and repair
- Overall development
- Injury recovery
- Healthy aging
