Speeding is a key risk factor in road crashes. In 2023, speeding alone was responsible for 68.1% (1,17,682) of road crash fatalities, outnumbering several other causes. While reaching a destination faster may seem tempting, the dangers of speeding far outweigh the marginal amount of time one saves.
Why is Speeding Dangerous?
Speeding gives us less time to react to a dangerous situation, like a car stopping abruptly or a pedestrian walking across the street. Speeding also reduces your ability to control the vehicle, especially in unexpected situations.
It is not just the driver’s safety that is at stake when speeding. The lives of other road users are also at risk.
Misconceptions About Speeding
Let’s debunk a few myths about speeding.
“I’ll save a lot of time.”
Driving faster may save you a few minutes. But it’s hardly worth the risk.
“I’m a skilled driver; I can handle it.”
Even experienced drivers may not be able to control a vehicle at high speeds.
“Everyone else does it.”
Just because others speed doesn’t mean it’s safe — or legal. It’s your responsibility to drive safely, regardless of what others are doing.
Legal and Emotional Consequences of Speeding
Speeding is not just dangerous, it’s illegal too. Speed limits are designed to keep everyone on the road safe. Breaking these limits can lead to hefty fines, suspension of your driving license, or serious road crash incidents. Injuries or fatalities due to speeding can also leave lasting emotional trauma on drivers, victims as well as their families.
How to Avoid the Temptation to Speed
- Plan ahead: If you find yourself often rushing, start your day early so there is enough time to reach your destination.
- Check speed limits: Frequently check the speedometer to make sure you are not speeding and look for speed signs on the road.
- Use cruise control: Using cruise control on highways can help maintain a steady and safe speed of the vehicle.
- Stay calm: If you feel stressed or impatient while driving, take deep breaths and remind yourself that safety comes first.
Be a Role Model for Safer Roads
When you choose not to speed, you set an example for others. By respecting speed limits and driving responsibly, you contribute to a safer environment for everyone.
