After the Aqua Line, MMRCL now eyes a 17.5 km underground route from Anik Depot to Gateway of India to ease congestion in South Mumbai.

As the city awaits the full launch of the 33.5km Aqua Line 3, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is already planning its next underground metro route.
The newly proposed Metro Line 11 will stretch 17.5km from Anik Depot to Gateway of India, passing through key locations like Bhendi Bazaar and Nagpada, as per Hindustan Times.
MMRCL has submitted the proposal to the Maharashtra government for approval. Once cleared by the state, the project will move on to the Union Urban Development Ministry.
What’s in the Plan?
Out of the 13 stations planned, only Anik Depot will be at ground level. The remaining 12 stations will be underground, making this route vital for easing traffic in South Mumbai’s most congested zones. The project includes a depot at Anik – Pratiksha Nagar BEST bus depot, spread over 16 hectares. This will allow seamless connectivity between metro and bus services.
How Will It Be Built?
Eight of the 13 stations will use the cut-and-cover technique—where the tunnel is dug, built, and then covered. The rest will use the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, which relies on the natural strength of surrounding rock formations.
Metro Line 11 will link with Metro Line 4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavli), the Aqua Line, the Monorail, and major suburban railway stations like Byculla and CSMT, making it a vital interchange route in the city’s public transport network.
MMRCL expects 5.8 lakh daily riders by 2031 and over 8.6 lakh by 2041. Details about bidding, construction start, and completion will only follow after approvals from both state and central governments.
