Marks and Spencer to close iconic 88-year-old store

Marks and Spencer in Murraygate, Dundee will close its doors to customers for good in days.

The exact date of the closure has been confirmed as July 6, 2024 – almost 88 years after the store first opened.

With a rich history in Dundee, the store has become iconic in the area.  The very first Scottish M&S opened in Dundee in the autumn of 1918 and was located just across the road from its current Murraygate store.

In August 1936, it moved across the road to a store that was double the size of its first site and shared the same, stylish architectural design as most M&S shops in the 1930s.

The closure marks the end of an era for locals but it’s not all bad news for shoppers.

Staff will move to a new M&S superstore at Gallagher Retail Park, located just a 10-minute walk away, on July 16.

Renovations have been underway to get the new store ready after it replaced the former DW Sports unit.

Dundee locals can visit the store – and enjoy all its new features, from 9am on July 16, Marks and Spencer confirmed.

The new site will be a fresh-market-style food hall, offering a range of fresh fruit and vegetables sourced from M&S’ Select Farm partners.

It will also house a bigger in-store bakery where shoppers can get their hands on freshly baked bread, cakes and pastries at any time during the day.

Mary Power, Store Manager of the new M&S Dundee store, said: “We are excited to announce that the new M&S Dundee store will open on July 16! I can’t wait to open the doors and welcome the local community in so they can see the very best of M&S for themselves.”

Mary continued: “I’ve worked for M&S for a long time, starting my career in the city of Dundee and I’m delighted to be bringing a great team of experienced colleagues from our current stores to the new one.

“Customers will reap the benefits of their knowledge when it comes to selecting products and knowing brands.”

Some locals were less excited about the closure of the Murraygate store, with one sharing on X, formerly Twitter: “That’ll be another shop floor laying vacant for goodness knows how long.”

Another chimed: “M&S moving from Murraygate to Gallagher Park. Towns need to find alternatives for town centres.”
