Mahindra & Mahindra has launched a new, high-tech manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its Chakan plant, aimed at producing electric-origin SUVs.

Situated within the company’s expansive 2.83-square-kilometre manufacturing hub, this facility is one of India’s largest greenfield projects. It is a water-positive, eco-friendly plant that runs entirely on renewable energy.

As part of its Rs 16,000 crore investment plan for the F22-F27 cycle, Mahindra has allocated Rs 4,500 crore to this project, which covers powertrain development, product innovation, and expanding manufacturing capacity.

The EV hub is a highly automated, integrated ecosystem, featuring over 1,000 robots and multiple automated systems. The plant focuses on gender diversity, aiming for a 25 percent female workforce.

With its fully automated press shop, AI-driven body shop, and robotic paint shops, the facility ensures maximum quality and efficiency. The body shop alone uses over 500 robots and automated systems, all overseen by an IoT-based “Nerve Center” for real-time monitoring and traceability.

According to NDTV, the facility also embraces Industry 4.0 technology, including Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) for smooth material movement.

The battery assembly area features a patented design for better insulation, precise geometry, and enhanced connectivity through hidden welding for cell terminals. The facility conducts rigorous multi-layered testing to ensure top-notch performance and reliability, including real-time temperature monitoring and automated anomaly detection.

Recently, Mahindra introduced the BE 6 and XEV 9e SUVs, built on the all-electric IN-GLO platform. These models, available with two battery pack options and three variants, will open for bookings on February 14, with deliveries set to begin in early March. Two more electric SUVs on the same platform are also in development.
