Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed officials to create dedicated passenger stops under each of the eight upcoming metro stations on the Kapurbawdi–Ghodbunder Road stretch in Thane city.
The decision was taken after Sarnaik conducted a site inspection along with key officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and the Transport Department.
Why Are These Stops Needed?
Currently, the staircases of the under-construction metro stations are placed between the main road and the service road—something that has raised safety concerns among citizens. This arrangement could put passengers at risk, especially during busy traffic hours, as per PTI.
To tackle this, Sarnaik has instructed that portions of the service road under each station be reserved exclusively for public transport vehicles like buses and autos. Private vehicles will not be allowed in these zones, which will act as safe boarding and alighting points for metro users.
Will This Help Traffic Too?
- Better Safety: Passengers will no longer have to cross busy roads to access buses, rickshaws, or the metro.
- Smooth Traffic Flow: With private vehicles out of the way, traffic jams can be avoided near metro stations.
- Public Transport First: These stops will support buses and rickshaws, encouraging more people to choose public travel.
What Else Is Being Planned?
The minister also wants the entire Ghodbunder Road to be concretised. This will make the road stronger and cut down on frequent repairs. It’s a long-term move aimed at improving the road quality across Thane.
