The Secret Life of Lego Bricks is a 336-page hardcover book with full-color artwork, diagrams, and other behind-the-scenes imagery.
It was written by Daniel Konstanski, the US editor for Blocks Magazine, and published by Sourcebooks with Lego’s seal of approval and branding.
Founded in 1932, Lego initially specialized in wooden toys before it began tinkering with plastic molds in the late 1940s. This book explores the trial and error that eventually led to the creation of the ubiquitous brick with eight studs.
In the 70-plus years since, Lego has released. many different styles of bricks–and this book pulls back the curtain on the process for introducing new designs.
Konstanski talked with set designers, element designers, graphic designers, and even testers and technicians to get the inside scoop. Along the way, you’ll also learn a lot about Lego the company.

Speaking of the history of Lego as a company, another book on the subject that’s worth checking out is The Lego Story. This book isn’t technically licensed by Lego, but author Jens Andersen spoke at length with former Lego Group CEO Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen and dug through Lego’s archives to craft the narrative.
So while The Secret Life of Lego Bricks was the first book for adult readers with the Lego brand attached, The Lego Story, which was published in 2022, is about as close to official as you can get without the logo. After all, it pulls from Lego’s actual archives. And Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen is the grandson of Lego founder Ole Kirk Christiansen. The Lego Group is still owned by the Kirk Kristiansen family.
The Lego Story is available as a 432-page hardcover book for $18.71 (was $32). A paperback edition will be published later this year and is up for preorder for $20. It’s also available as a Kindle ebook, and Kindle Unlimited subscribers can read it for free. Relatedly, Prime members can subscribe to Kindle Unlimited for free for three months as part of Amazon’s early Prime Day 2025 sale. Amazon is running the same promotion for Audible, which means you could listen (and keep) the audiobook version of The Lego Story for free.
Other notable Lego books with Amazon Prime-exclusive discounts include popular officially licensed coffee table books about the history of Lego minifigures and a guide with build ideas for every day of the year. Both books are over 50% off. Lego Minifigure: A Visual History is on sale for $18.43, while 365 Things to Do with Lego Bricks is only $11.24 (was $26). If you’re a Star Wars fan, check out the official Lego Star Wars Ideas Book for $14.38 (was $25). This book has more than 200 building and game ideas themed around Lego’s large lineup of Star Wars sets.
We’ve marked the Prime-exclusive deals next to the prices in the lists below. Some of the books come with an exclusive Lego brick or minifigure. Most of the books are officially licensed, but cover art without Lego’s logo indicates an unofficial book. We only picked well-reviewed unlicensed books. The button above will take you to an Amazon hub we made where you can see all of the books and their cover images on one page.
