‘I’m a hotel cleaner—worst area in the home for spreading germs’

There’s nothing quite like stepping into a freshly cleaned hotel room, with its  pristine sheets and gleaming surfaces. Many of us have attempted to recreate this level of cleanliness in our own homes, and now a professional hotel cleaner has revealed the secret to achieving it.

Lisa Williams, Executive Housekeeper at The Grand, York, emphasises the importance of cleaning certain areas first due to their propensity for harbouring germs. If you’re aiming for that hotel-standard cleanliness in your own home, then it’s crucial to focus on what are known as ‘high touch’ points before anything else. Lisa said: “The most important thing to remember when beginning a clean is to dust and sanitise all the high-touch points first.

“Things like door handles, light switches, taps and handrails can be easy to miss later on, but host bacteria due to regularly being touched.”

Starting with these areas ensures you don’t continue to spread any germs around the room during the rest of your reset and can make the biggest difference to a room looking and feeling clean.

Once you’ve finished with the high-touch points, you can then move on to low-touch point areas like mirrors, windowsills and light fittings, and follow up with hoovering or mopping the floor.

Lisa said: “Cleaning a room in this order ensures that you are being as efficient as you can be.”

Once your room is spick and span, you can add a few finishing touches to enhance the presentation of the space, making it feel more like a luxury hotel.

Lisa suggests adopting the viewpoint of a guest – even if you’re not expecting visitors – as it’ll provide a fresh perspective and highlight any minor details that might have been overlooked, such as a dusty mirror or a lopsided cushion.

For the final flourish, add a spritz of room fragrance to leave your home feeling wonderfully fresh for yourself or any potential guests.
