Epic Games has given Fortnite Island creators an ultimatum to remove misleading content from their work, as the developer cracks down on how islands are advertized to players. An updated rule has been added to the Fortnite Island creator program that expressly forbids anyone making an experience from advertising it using terms that promise players specific rewards when the island itself doesn’t offer them. Creators have been given a short grace period by Epic before “escalating penalties” come into effect.
Anyone looking to make their own Fortnite Islands can do so within Epic Games’ own Create program. Users can leverage the Unreal Editor for Fortnite to make these islands, and potentially even earn a payout based on player engagement.
Epic Games has just updated the battle royale game‘s Island creator rules, however, enforcing stricter control on exactly how creatives can advertise what they make. Soon, anyone using specific terms to mislead potential players as to their island’s contents will be penalized.
“Coins and terms like ‘AFK’ and ‘XP’ are being used in island thumbnails, titles, and other metadata to mislead players into believing that they can earn or unlock an impossibly high amount of XP. Spoilers, they don’t,” Epic’s Fortnite Creators account writes.
“Our rules (1.13) prohibit using misleading content like this in your metadata. You have until Tuesday February 4 to remove any misleading content like this, including references to AFK, XP, coin farm, coin slide, or images of Fortnite coins (or similar coins).”
Epic’s Fortnite Island Creator rule 1.13, which was updated on Thursday January 23, says anyone making an experience needs to “keep it authentic.” This means any assets used to promote the Fortnite Island must be accurate and not mention features like V-Bucks, Battle Passes, or real-world currency at all.
“We will be removing this content from our ecosystem and creators will receive escalating penalties – including impacts to monetization, island removal, and account suspension,” Epic concludes.
Some creators go on to ask Epic what this means for mentioning XP in the map or heads-up display once a player is on the island itself, which the developer clarifies. “This rule applies to ‘XP’ being used in island metadata (thumbnails, titles, descriptions, etc.), not in-game content.”
