The highway maintenance material company Instarmac has shared the meanings behind some of the least known signs on the UK roads.
Whilst all learners were tasked with knowing many of the most common road signs in order to pass their test, there are some that many drivers are unsure of.
Nick Holmes, Technical Training Manager at Instarmac, recommended that all drivers regularly brush up on their knowledge of road signs.
He explained: “Knowing and understanding road signs is vital to being a safe driver and limiting the stress experienced by yourself and others.
“Some of these signs are incredibly common and all road users should be aware of them. Others in this list might seem like more of a novelty, but understanding how to react if you do see one of these signs is vital.”
According to Instarmac, one of the most common signs on the road that many motorists do not know the meaning behind is the blue circle that featured a red border and cross.
This sign signifies a clearway, meaning it is illegal to stop on the road in any circumstance, including picking up or dropping off passengers.
A variant can often be found in the top left corner of other road signs commonly seen in urban areas, which state that drivers cannot stop at certain times.
Another sign the company noted some drivers may be unaware of depicts four lines going through a crossed circle with the words ‘Zone Ends’.
Instarmac highlighted that this sign can be particularly confusing if motorists did not spot any previous road signs.
However, in most cases, it is there to inform motorists that any local parking restrictions no longer apply from that point onwards, often meaning drivers can park for free.
Finally, Instarmac revealed the meaning behind a circular sign that has a pure white centre, rather than featuring any icons.
Whilst the company reassured drivers that the sign is not half finished, they noted that vehicles are unable to use the upcoming road, meaning drivers should turn back.
Typically, not complying with traffic signs can lead to drivers being issued a fine of £100 and three penalty points on their licence.
