A Dead By Daylight-style asymmetrical horror game entrenched in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead universe? Sounds like a winning formula. Sadly, Evil Dead The Game never really found any long-term stability, and content updates were halted last year. After mysteriously disappearing from some console and PC storefronts this week, it has now been officially confirmed that the game is being pulled, and that includes being delisted from Steam.
Thanks to the firepower of the Evil Dead franchise, things initially looked bright for Evil Dead The Game. Bringing Ash Williams and several other beloved characters into a multiplayer horror game, it hit the 500,000 sales mark just five days after it launched in May 2022. Impressive stuff. That was also achieved without the game being available on Steam – that moment arrived roughly a year later. However, it never got a strong foothold in this corner of the horror genre, which is heavily dominated by Dead By Daylight.
In September 2023, Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games confirmed that they wouldn’t be making any more content for the game – that meant no more new characters, weapons, maps, and modes would be added. The servers stayed up, and the game remained purchasable, but it was essentially left to its own devices – the developers even enabled its double XP and double Soul Points modifiers permanently as a farewell gift to help players progress much faster.
Now, Evil Dead The Game will be removed from storefronts altogether and will no longer be available for purchase. As reported by VGC earlier this week, it had already vanished from the Epic Games Store and PlayStation Store without any kind of warning. However, Saber and Boss Team have now confirmed that it is removing Evil Dead The Game from sale, which means it’s being stripped from Steam and the Xbox Store as well.
“Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone,” a Steam announcement post reads. “We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.”
It’s good to see that the game’s existing community will still be able to jump in and play with each other, but it’s always sad and concerning to see games stripped from storefronts. If you’ve had your eye on Evil Dead for a while but never pulled the trigger, sadly it looks like your chance has gone.
