As Bungie prepares for the revival of Marathon in a new-look form for 2025, another of its classic PC games sits almost forgotten. Myth: The Fallen Lords and its sequel Myth 2: Soulblighter were the studio’s first foray into the strategy game genre, and stood tall among the likes of Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, and Starcraft as two of the best RTS games of the era. Yet as the developer moved on to Halo and Destiny, the Myth games fell into the background – but a small group of dedicated fans has worked hard to change that.
Project Magma began its life as a map-making group for Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth 2: Soulblighter, but grew over time into a collective of dedicated fans that have been working to support the RTS games ever since, updating and optimizing it for new hardware and providing ways to play online with like-minded enthusiasts.
Perhaps you missed the original (and its sequel) at the time. Focusing on pure squad and unit management rather than the resource-gathering and base-building aspects of other such strategy games, the Myth series follows the fight between the forces of Light and Dark. Its battles make use of realistic physics, weather effects, and friendly fire, meaning you’ll have to take your surroundings and positioning into careful consideration at all times.
The latest release from Project Magma, Myth: Twice Born Edition is its most definitive offering yet. It includes a newer, “more accurate preservation” of the original Fallen Lords designed to keep it as it was back in the day (other such projects had previously implemented additional features from the sequel).
It also offers the most up-to-date version of Myth 2 and its Chimera expansion pack, with the ability to save, pause, and fast-forward even when in co-op, as well as improved shadows and reflections. Of course, that’s just what’s new in the latest update – if you’ve yet to take a look at Project Magma’s work before, there’s much, much more on offer here, from gorgeous textures to improved pathfinding and balance tweaks, along with a whole list of other fan-made third-party plugins you can add to the mix.
There’s one big caveat. You’ll need a copy of Myth 2 to play, and while you can probably find a physical disc up for grabs (or try the first game’s demo, available through the Project Magma website), there’s currently no way to get a fresh copy digitally. Given that the classic Marathon games did recently make their way to Steam courtesy of the Aleph One fan team, perhaps we’ll eventually see something similar here. “If I have anything to say about it, I’ll make it happen,” developer ‘Jon God’ writes in the comments for the announcement trailer.
