Brilliant supermarket solution whitens dirty socks ‘overnight’

White and pale-coloured socks are prone to getting stained and dirty, especially if you’ve owned them for a while.

Luckily, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their simple solution for whitening dirty white socks.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.8 million followers on Instagram. Recently, fans of hers have taken to social media to share their hacks for solving common cleaning and laundry issues.

On one such group, Facebook user Cara McQuaid posted: “Washed my daughter’s white socks last night at 60C with washing powder and disinfectant, they came out still looking dirty.

“She wore them outside so the soles were very dirty going in. Is there something I can change to stop this? I clean the machine regularly, filter included.”

The post was inundated with responses but the most suggested option was to use Milton sterilising tablets or fluid.

Jade Wicks commented: “I soak all whites overnight in Milton or any sterilising fluid and cold water then wash as normal. They come out like new.”

Denise Deville replied: “Soak in cold water and use Milton sterilising fluid or tablets brilliant. For whites.”

Milton Sterilising tablets and fluids can be found online or in most local supermarkets.

Milton Sterilising Tablets cost £2.75 from Sainsbury’s, Milton Antibacterial Laundry Tablets cost £5.20 from Boots and Milton Fluid costs £2.49 from Superdrug.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using Napisan, soda crystals, Vanish and bleach.

Julie Briggs replied: “Napisan is fab for whites.”

Sharon Patience commented: “Soda crystals in the wash with detergent. No need for softener.”

Heather Ditchburn Curry suggested: “I use Vanish soap bar on soles of white socks, works really well.”

Cath Conroy posted: “I put them on a hot wash with powder and bleach, they come up like new.”
