After multiple delays, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is preparing to partially open the long-pending Yellow Line (RV Road–Bommasandra) by the end of August.
Initially, only seven stations will be operational as per Moneycontrol. The initial phase will cover seven stations—RV Road, Jayadeva Hospital, Central Silk Board, Kudlu Gate, Hosa Road, Infosys Foundation Konappana Agrahara, and Bommasandra—with three trains running every 20 minutes.
This 19-km elevated corridor, which includes a total of 16 stations, was initially planned to open in December 2021. However, train shortages and other challenges caused repeated delays. According to Moneycontrol, political pressure is also mounting, with BJP MP Tejasvi Surya recently protesting to push for its early launch.
BMRCL is considering two options:
– Start with just seven stations and a 20-minute frequency.
– Open the entire line with a 30-minute frequency.
“We are evaluating both options — either to open only seven stations with a frequency of 20 minutes or to open the entire line with a frequency of around 30 minutes. We will discuss both options with the state government before taking a final decision,” BMRCL, Managing Director (MD) M Maheshwar Rao said as quoted by Moneycontrol.
BMRCL Managing Director Rao stated that operations may begin once they receive the Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) certificate, followed by approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).
Meanwhile, BMRCL has also outlined three contingency plans:
Run end-to-end trains on only seven stations.
Operate between Central Silk Board and Bommasandra with stops at all stations.
Run from Ragigudda to Bommasandra to avoid crowding from passengers switching lines at RV Road.
Additionally, officials reportedly expect the fourth train to arrive by mid-August, with five more CBTC trains expected by October this year. Once these arrive, all stations can open with an 8–9 minute frequency.
As per Moneycontrol, the delays in train delivery stem from the India-China border tensions in 2020, challenges with the Make in India requirement for 75 per cent local production, and visa issues for Chinese engineers. Train parts like propulsion systems from Japan also arrived late. Eventually, CRRC partnered with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail to build the coaches in India.
BMRCL hopes to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Yellow Line, as well as the Nagasandra–Madavara extension on the Green Line and lay the foundation for Phase 3, which includes:
– JP Nagar 4th Phase–Kempapura (32.1 km)
– Hosahalli–Kadabagere (12.5 km)
In addition, it is also seeking early clearance for the 37-km Hebbal–Sarjapur corridor under Phase 3A.
