If you’ve not played it, you’ve got to try Slime Rancher. Trading crops for creatures and sweet potatoes for slimes, it’s one of the best life games on Steam with an astounding user rating and a plethora of free updates over the years. If that isn’t already enough, you can grab the game for next to nothing right now thanks to a Steam sale.
Slime Rancher casts you as the excellently named Beatrix LeBeau, who journeys a thousand light-years from Earth to the Far, Far Range. Here, you trade Stardew Valley’s quaint agricultural lifestyle for adorable space slimes, and each one needs to be looked after if you hope to succeed on the cosmic Plort Market – that’s where you earn the big bucks.
Apart from making money, you also grow crops, feed slimes, invest in science, expand your ranch, and upgrade your equipment to become the best rancher in the universe. If you’re familiar with the life game genre, Slime Rancher puts a galactic twist on the loop you’re used to.
The Steam sale is also doing wonders for Slime Rancher, as the concurrent player count hits its highest peak ever at over 15,000. I’d expect that number to climb throughout the weekend too, as more players check out the sale. You might only be able to play Slime Rancher on your own, but this incline is still mighty impressive. With a Slime Rancher movie in the works, you’ll want to make sure you’re familiar with the universe before it heads to the big screen.
There have also been five substantial updates to Slime Rancher, giving new players even more to do than at launch. You can now explore an entirely new zone, hunt down more slimes, enhance your ranch storage, use drones to ease your burdens, and develop even more enhanced tech than before.
You don’t need to just take my word for it, either, as Slime Rancher has been going from strength to strength over the seven years since launch. Right now the game has a staggering 112,000 Steam user reviews, sitting at 97% positive. With that, it’s easy to understand why a big sale has propelled Slime Rancher to its highest Steam player count on record. If you want to get involved, you’ve still got some time.
Slime Rancher is 90% off until Wednesday December 4, so you can expect to pay $1.99 / £1.59 until then. You can find the game on Steam right here.
