Now that Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 8 is finally here, Larian’s journey with the RPG is at an end. I’m sure the studio will drop some bug fixes over time, but Larian has made it a point that patch 8 marks the end of extra content for the DnD game. This means the developer is fully turning its attention to what’s next, as it has two videogames in development at once. While I imagine we’ll be waiting quite some time to see both in action, Larian CEO Swen Vincke has provided us with an update – and development is going well.
As of right now, we have no idea what Larian is working on next. The studio says it started making a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 but dropped it in favor of doing something new, although what that is remains a mystery. I’m hoping at least one of Larian’s upcoming RPGs is baked in sci-fi, because I’d love to see the studio take that deep understanding of fantasy in a new direction.
Whatever it is Larian’s working on, Vincke is confident that it’ll be as big, or maybe even bigger, than BG3.
“We’re deep in the trenches working on our next big thing,” Vincke says in a new GameSpot interview. “It’s shaping up quite well, actually, but it’s crazy ambitious. There are so many new things that we can do these days, so it’s complex.
“On top of that, we’re trying to figure out how we’re going to be making two games. We’ve talked about that openly, that we’re working on two games. So organising ourselves for that is also not the easiest thing in the universe because we make very complicated games with lots of permutations and agency for players. Predicting when those are going to be finished is hard.”
Vincke then explains that Larian isn’t trying to grow its size too much, instead planning how it will hopefully use its developers across both projects where possible. Vincke does add that it’s never quite that simple, with two massive games on the go at once, so we’ll just have to wait and see which gets revealed first.
