‘I’m a pharmacist – here’s what you need to know about weight loss jabs’ | UK | News

A pharmacist is urging patients to reconsider weight loss injections after they were linked to fatalities in the UK.

Between 2020 and 2024, 18 deaths suspected to be linked to weight loss injections were reported to the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), according to ITV News.

The World Health Organisation also issued a warning over the rise in fake online medicines, which claim to treat diabetes and weight loss.

Neil Raichura, a pharmacist at Well Pharmacy, shared four pieces of advice for people considering weight loss jabs.

Spot rogue traders

Mr Raichura encourages all patients to look out for certification by licensed pharmacies to avoid “faceless rogue traders” which are “likely unfazed by the dangers their product poses to consumers”.

Suppliers of medicine in the UK are normally regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council or Care Quality Commission, and pharmacies can often opt to put a voluntary certification on their site.

Mr Raichura said: “While it can be tempting to purchase medication online, there is no guarantee for your safety and there are multiple risks which can occur.”

He added that products sold by unregulated medical websites come with a high chance of being filled with harmful substances, toxic additives or incorrect dosages.

Read up on the side effects

Mr Raichura notes that unpredictable side effects could arise from taking uncertified weight loss jabs.

Issues such as stomach paralysis, pancreatitis and bowel obstructions have all reportedly been identified in customers who have purchased unregulated medicines.

Get advice and support

Mr Raichura warned that unregulated websites may not provide support once the product is paid for, meaning consumers could be unaware how to administer or take the correct dosage of the drug.

He encourages patients to understand all the risks associated with weight loss jabs before they begin the treatment, and commit to a calorie-controlled diet and exercise programme.

Have a proper consultation

Before taking weight-loss jabs, customers should consult with a professional on lifestyle and diet, as well as seek guidance on the best treatment plan.
