7 worst energy-guzzling appliances to keep on when you leave home

If you’re heading off on your summer holiday, you probably already have a to-do list a mile long. However, there’s one thing that should be added to that list in order to save money while you’re away from home – and that is which  appliances should be switched off to conserve the most power. According to Cookology founder Andrew Wright, there are several appliances that can suck energy and cash from your home if you leave them plugged on when you leave, as well as two that should never, ever be switched off.

The first thing to unplug before you go is your kettle, air fryer and toaster. Andrew said: “Even if they’re switched off, these appliances may still use energy, adding to both your electricity bill and your carbon footprint. Even more importantly, unplugging them removes any risk of fire that could be caused by a possible fault in the product.”

If you have an electric hob or oven, this can be unplugged too. Although they are generally safe, it’s always a good idea to add another layer of precaution against fire risks.

Your dishwasher and washing machine should also be unplugged.

Andrew said: “Both these devices are also guilty of using energy, even on standby, due to the need to be ready to heat water on demand. It’s also advised to leave the door open on your washing machine or dishwasher before going away, to avoid any stagnant smells or mould.”

In your un-plugging frenzy, Andrew warns there are two appliances which should never be switched off – even if it will save you a couple of extra pounds.

He said fridges and freezers must always remain powered on. “Even if your fridge – or freezer – is empty before you head on holiday, it’s still a good idea to keep it plugged in and running, as unplugging will cause it to defrost.

“Regardless of whether there’s food in it at the time, if you leave your fridge-freezer to defrost while you’re on holiday, you’ll be coming home from holiday to a damp and smelly kitchen.

“Wine coolers and mini fridges are likely to cause less trouble, but it’s still best to leave on.”

Your Wi-Fi should also stay on, as if you have security systems in your home such as a video doorbell, they likely rely on it for power.
