How to grow better tomatoes with 1 ‘incredibly powerful’ scrap item

Watering your tomato plants with one kitchen scrap can yield the best tomatoes when it comes time to harvest. Coffee grounds can help throughout the lifespan of the tomato plant, from tiny sprouting seedlings to fully mature plants. The gardening experts at This Is My Garden have shared that watering with coffee grounds makes for a great liquid fertiliser for plants.

Leftover coffee contains three essential nutrients — nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium — which, when added to the soil, can easily be absorbed by the roots of tomato plants. The coffee grounds also retain a huge amount of moisture, which the tomato plant needs for growing its fruit.

Leftover coffee can be used as a fertilising tea for tomato plants throughout the entire spring and summer period.

After enjoying your morning coffee, the experts suggest simply running more water through the leftover grounds. Once the weak coffee has cooled down, it can be used as an added health bonus when watering your tomato plants.

Similarly, if you don’t finish your cup of coffee, you can also use this to water your tomatoes. Simply add an equal amount of water to the coffee and use this when it comes time to water your plants.

Coffee can support tomatoes throughout the growing process, even when starting the seeds indoors. Just mix the spent coffee grounds into your seed-starting soil, and it will help the seedlings speed up their growth.

Following this, the leftover coffee can then be used when it’s time to move the tomatoes outdoors. When planting, just mix in three to four tablespoons of coffee grounds into the soil in each planting hole.

These coffee grounds will slowly release all of their nutrients into the soil and then into the roots. For further benefits, just add a few more tablespoons on top of the surface of each plant after planting.
