A popular retailer of new and used cars has warned that Chinese car companies could continue to grow in popularity in the UK during 2025, despite debates over whether tariffs should be put on them.
Despite having a relatively young automotive industry, China is the world’s largest producer of vehicles, making over 30 million cars in 2023 alone.
As a result, the vehicle marketplace Carwow predicts that the amount of Chinese-made cars on UK roads will skyrocket in 2025, with one survey finding that a third of Brits are interested in buying one.
They explained: “2024 was another big year for Chinese car manufacturers making an impact on the world’s roads, and we expect 2025 to be no different.
“A recent Carwow survey found that almost a third (32%) of drivers would consider purchasing an electric vehicle from a Chinese manufacturer – up 19% year-on-year.”
Whilst a number of western car companies, including Volkswagen, Tesla, and Volvo have used China to produce models for a number of years, an increasing number of companies unique to the country are beginning to enter European countries, including the UK.
Currently, the most popular among Brits is MG. Once an entirely British brand, the company is now a part of SAIC and offers a particularly wide range of models, spanning from the affordable MG3 hybrid supermini to the sleek Cyberster electric sportscar.
Other notable models continuing to grow in popularity in the UK are BYD, who recently announced that they built more electric cars than Tesla in 2024, and GWM, a company that rivals the likes of Mini with the ORA 03.
However, Carwow noted that even more Chinese car companies are due to enter the UK market in 2025, with brands like Jaecoo and ONVO possibly having even more success.
They continued: “We’ll see the Jaecoo’s J7 hybrid SUV launch this month, priced from £29,500 – alongside ONVO, the latest offering from Chinese automotive giant Nio. Expect these names to shake up the industry even further.
“MG and BYD were popular Chinese brands in 2024, but Carwow predicts a new Chinese contender will dominate the market in 2025.”
Whilst Chinese-made cars could dominate the automotive landscape in 2025, Carwow also predicted that Jaguar will continue to shock and potentially divide motorists during the year, ahead of the launch of their first model since the rebrand.
They added: “We expect Jaguar will continue challenging perceptions and courting controversy this year.
“Although the brand won’t be selling cars in 2025, it will need to maintain brand momentum ahead of its official product launch in 2026. So watch this space!”
