The Warhammer 40,000 universe is vast, spanning hundreds of books, video games, and–of course–the tabletop wargame. It can be intimidating to get into, but the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: The Ultimate Guide hardcover book launching October 29 is looking like one of the best introductions to this massive fictional setting. Preorders are available at Amazon, and you can grab it right now for a slight discount at $40.50 (normally $45).

The Warhammer 40,000: The Ultimate Guide is written by Guy Haley and Gav Thorpe, who have previously written numerous other Warhammer novels. The 336-page encyclopedia is packed with lore for each of 40K’s many factions, plus illustrations and high-quality photos of the tabletop miniatures, including detailed looks at how each army and their most important characters have evolved over each edition of the game. If you’re curious to know more about the Imperium of Man, its super-powered Space Marine soldiers, and its many enemies (and victims), or you’re a veteran looking to admire some professionally painted minis, this book has it all.

Dungeons & Dragons – Worlds & Realms: Adventures from Greyhawk to Faerun and Beyond
Coincidentally, the other wildly popular legacy tabletop game, Dungeons & Dragons, is also getting a new book on October 29 that details its massive fantasy multiverse. Worlds & Realms: Adventures from Greyhawk to Faerun and Beyond is part art book, sourcebook, and novel, featuring art from across the game’s history alongside in-universe lore and short stories set in the many realms and planes of existence D&D has explored over the last 50 years. Fans can preorder the book at Amazon, where it’s discounted to just $35 (down from $50).
