Wheeler Dealers host Mike Brewer has called on Range Rover to recall vehicles to urgently fix security issues.
Range Rover owners are under severe threat of having their car stolen with the SUVs among the most targeted by criminals.
Earlier this year, the DVLA confirmed that the Range Rover Velar R-Dyn was the most sought-after model with two in every 100 taken.
Land Rover also came in as the most stolen brand, with 924 machines lost per 100,000 on the road.
Since, Land Rover has invested a staggering £10million to improve the security of its models but Mr Brewer has urged the firm to do more.
Speaking to the Car Dealer Magazine podcast, Mike said: “I tell you what else they can do, get on the problem of keyless entry, just do a recall.
“Am I being a bit daft here or stupid? What’s up with the key, go back to using a bloody key. Simple. Do a massive recall and give everyone an ignition barrel and a door lock. It’s not that hard, surely.”
Land Rover’s new security features can also be fitted to previous-generation vehicles to keep them protected.
Meanwhile, models which are out of warranty will also be eligible to have the new technology installed.
Mr Brewer’s comments come after Jaguar Land Rover launched their own in-house car insurance product after owners struggled to get cover.
Range Rovers have been the victim of particularly large price hikes due to the rise in thefts with some owners receiving quotes of over £20,000 per year from traditional insurers.
But, Mr Brewer said Range Rover should be addressing the problem head-on rather than introducing new schemes.
He added: “I think it’s laughable this whole thing, particularly as Jaguar Land Rover doesn’t sell an awful lot of vehicles. [They] only sell about 8,000 vehicles a year whereas other manufacturers sell that in a week.
“So for Jaguar Land Rover this is a problem that is easy for them to get on top of rather than insurance products. Rather than going down that route. I think this is a problem they can get on top of. When you’ve got a keyless entry system in a car surely that works by ones and zeroes, it’s completely digital. There must be something they can do on a recall.”
Land Rover Insurance launched in October to address the issues with 4,000 clients already enquiring. The new policy has an average monthly premium of less than £200 meaning yearly fees would be around £2,400 per annum.
A JLR spokesman previously said: “Customers of luxury cars and other luxury goods are experiencing an increase in thefts due to organised criminal activity in the UK. The desirability of our luxury vehicles, coupled with concerns around thefts, has recently led to challenges in obtaining insurance cover for some clients.
“We are fully committed to doing everything we can to address this by adopting a multifaceted approach: from our significant investment in vehicle security, to now providing our own insurance.”
