It is proposed to be a four-lane flyover that is expected to consist of nine spans, each spanning a distance of 25 metres.

As the city of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala has been going through significant infrastructural development, the Enchakkal Flyover in the city has finally been given the green light, and the construction work has already commenced.

The piling work on the project started last week. The much-awaited flyover’s route will start from the terminus of the Chackai flyover, and it will extend to the point where the Muttathara overpass links with the NH66 bypass.

The main aim of the construction of the Enchakkal flyover is to remove the traffic congestion at the Enchakkal Junction. As reported by the Times of India, the central government had granted financial clearance for the Enchakkal flyover project, which is estimated at Rs 47 crore.

It is expected that the construction work for the Enchakkal Junction will continue for 18 months. It is proposed to be a four-lane flyover that is expected to consist of nine spans, each spanning a distance of 25 metres. The construction project of the flyover has been taken up by the Cherian Varkey Construction Company, which will be serving as the project contractor for the flyover.

Over the years, the Enchakkal junction has been a major centre for traffic congestion in the area, increasing the demand for flyovers. The construction of this flyover will smooth up the vehicular movement from Kovalam, Shankhumugham, and Vizhinjam to the city centre.

As the flyover will be created along the bustling Kazhakkootam-Mukkola NH corridor, it will serve as a junction for vehicles coming from East Fort, Vallakadavu, Attakulangara, and Pettah-Enchakkal.

Earlier, the traffic used to intensify at the Chackai to Kovalam service road, which would ultimately lead to the vehicles being stationary for 15-20 minutes. The congestion is expected to be better with the construction of this flyover.

Apart from that, a new 12-metre-wide service bridge at Thiruvallam was given a green light by the authorities. The service bridge is planned to run parallel to the existing old bridge on the eastern side. The bridge has been constructed to prevent the alarming rate of accidents that have occurred in the area.
